BRIDGEWATER—Sixty-two years into the town’s biggest and best tradition there are still new things to discover.

The annual Bridgewater Country Fair that takes place this coming weekend, Aug. 16, 17 and 18, will see some new attractions, such as a mechanical bull ride, and the return of some old ones, like Bingo, and the "hot dog pig racing" contest, of course.

“Bingo last appeared at the Bridgewater Fair in 1989,” said fair secretary Cathi Sullivan. “The Bridgewater Women’s Auxiliary will sponsor the Bingo, with all proceeds to support the Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Department.”

The fire department puts on the fair in the small town north of Danbury as its major annual fundraiser, and launches it Friday evening with a firemen's parade (see the full fair schedule below). “The operating budget for the fire department is $130,000 per year,” said Neil Cable, the fair chairman. “So we hope to make that much.”

This year's fair will also have a pet parade, baking contests and a pie eating contest that anyone can join in. When asked what people who have never been to the fair before should be on the look out for, Mr. Cable was succinct in his response: “The food,” he said. “The fire department cooks all the food.”

The always-anticipated annual celebration of agricultural contests, livestock competitions, tasty concessions and all-ages rides has over its 62-year history become the highlight of happenings in Bridgewater. Beyond the roast beef sandwiches and ox pulls and live entertainment and pig races and midway games exists a binding spirit, perhaps something stable that residents can embrace in a town in political flux.

This year--a year after the FBI carted off boxes of files in a raid of town hall that remains unexplained--First Selectman Bill Stuart, who runs the fair raffle every year, will not run for the role again.
