Avon Wine, Chocolate Event With Gina Barreca for International Women’s Day

Avon Wine, Chocolate Event With Gina Barreca for International Women’s Day

Debbie Wright, owner of Project Closet and a fashion stylist on WFSB’s Better CT and 96.5 WTIC FM’s Damon Scott Show, will be the evening’s emcee.

What better way to celebrate International Women’s Day than with two favorite things—wine and chocolate?

Soroptimist International of the Farmington Valley (SIFV) will celebrate the occasion with both, fine wine from around the world and original chocolate creations from closer to home.

Acclaimed chefs from the Seasons Restaurant at the Avon Old Farms Hotel, Apricots and Ann Howard Catering, Cavey’s Restaurant, Carole Peck’s Good News Café, The Grist Mill, Millwrights and Max Downtown will create decadent appetizers, main courses and desserts for the SIFV’s second annual event, “A Toast to Women! – An Evening of Wine and Chocolate Delights."

“It will be a culinary treat,” SIFV President Kathy McAfee assured.

This affair will mark International Women’s Day March 8 at the Avon Old Farms Hotel, from 7:30 to 10 p.m. For the $50 ticket price, attendees can enjoy all tastings and seminars, as well as complimentary hors d'oeuvres, coffee, and tea.  A cash bar will be available. Based on the premise that chocolate is a super food (in moderation) and wine is heart healthy, McAfee asked, “Can wine and chocolate really save the world? Is it good for people?”

“We’re putting that to the test with our cause. We’re raising money for women and girls,” said McAfee. “The real aim is to bring the community together and reach our goal of raising at least $20,000.”

Proceeds will support the Grace Academy, an independent, interfaith, tuition-free middle school for girls from underserved families in the city of Hartford; the Prudence Crandall Center, a domestic violence program in New Britain, and SIFV-sponsored awards that empower women and girls to live their dreams.

What’s more, Hartford Courant weekly columnist, best-selling author and UCONN professor Gina Barreca will make a keynote speech, sure to be hilarious and inspiring.

Debbie Wright, owner of Project Closet and a fashion stylist on WFSB’s Better CT and 96.5 WTIC FM’s Damon Scott Show, will be the evening’s emcee.

Renowned live auctioneer John Motley, principal of Motley Consulting, will lead a silent auction with coveted prize packages, including a tour of ESPN and lunch for four people with Mike Golic of the “Mike & Mike” show.

McAfee said the group sought Motley out because “he’s so fabulous.”

The choir from the Grace Academy will perform at the event.

SIFV is the local chapter of a global volunteer organization working to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment. Simply put, they’re “an army of women volunteers,” according to McAfee.

The army has supported the Grace Academy since its launch in 2010. They continue to provide funding because they’ve “seen the impact they’ve made in these future leaders lives,” said McAfee.

Their continued support of the Prudence Crandall Center has helped create a teen center, children’s room and emergency welcome packages for women fleeing domestic abuse situations.

This night of fun will do a lot of good for the local community, which is important on this day of global recognition for women and girls.

“We’re coming together and saying women matter and make a difference,” said McAfee.
