Summer Encore for Jazz Series at Palace Theater in Waterbury

Summer Encore for Jazz Series at Palace Theater in Waterbury

Dana Lauren

Couldn’t get enough of the Palace Theater’s Summer Season of Jazz Series, or missed it altogether? You’re in luck—the theater again teams up with New England Arts and Entertainment LLC to present the Late Summer Jazz Series, a four-show run that launched Friday evening with The Allegra Levy Quartet.

Levy, a recent New England Conservatory grad and rising presence within the New York City jazz scene, brought to Waterbury her original lyrics and rich, emotive voice, backed up by a band of skilled musicians.

New England Arts and Entertainment’s successful eight-show jazz series at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Southbury, which ran from September 2012 through this past April, gained the attention of the Palace Theater, and subsequently moved to Waterbury for a three-show run. High attendance at these shows prompted the Palace and New England Arts and Entertainment to follow the Summer Season of Jazz with this Late Summer Jazz Series.

“We love … the nightclub atmosphere we were able to create,” said Michael Gow of New England Arts and Entertainment. “We are trying to create an affordable New York City jazz club experience in downtown Waterbury.”

And as a result, the shows go on.

On Friday, Aug. 2, Dana Lauren showcases her voice—which earned her a spot in the semifinals of this year’s Thelonuous Monk International Jazz Vocal Competition—while her band (Joel Frahm on tenor sax, Manual Valera on piano, Will Graefe on guitar, Luques Curtis on bass and Jack Goldbas on drums) flaunts its musical chops on stage at the Palace. Listen for songs from her latest acclaimed CD, “It’s You Or No One.”

The Ali Ryerson – Joe Carter Duo take the stage on Friday, Aug. 16, performing classic jazz hits (think Miles Davis and Duke Ellington) in their signature style that combines American and Brazilian musical traditions. Ryerson plays the jazz flute and Carter plays the guitar.

Grammy award-winning saxophonist Lauren Sevian closes the series on Friday, Sept. 13. Sevian boasts countless years of performing experience, having begun professionally at age 12 and toured nationally and internationally, as well as musical talent lauded by critics and audiences alike.

Said Sheree Marcucci, marketing and public relations officer at the Palace Theater: “the sometimes discordant, sometimes mournful and oftentimes just plain low-down and sexy sounds that come from the outstanding caliber and eclectic line-up of jazz artists Mike Gow of New England Arts has put together, is exactly what a jazz series should be.”

Each concert takes place at 7:30 in the Palace’s Poli Club, an intimate venue that seats an audience of 90. A full bar is available, and dinner can be ordered in advance through New England Arts and Entertainment’s website, newenglandartsandentertainment.com.

Tickets to individual shows are $17, while season tickets (with reserved seating) to all four shows are $60. For tickets and more information, visit online at palacetheaterct.org.
