The Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts will present nine-time Grammy Award-winner Jose Feliciano in a free concert on Sunday, July 20, to commemorate and celebrate the opening of the all-new Levitt Pavilion and to launch the Inaugural Summer Season in the new outdoor facility (see details about the new facility at the end).

The newly graded and lush lawn will officially open to the public at 5 p.m., a ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 6 p.m., and at 7 p.m. Feliciano and his quintet will make history by giving the very first performance.

Feliciano has donated his performance fee in order to support the ongoing Campaign for a New Levitt Pavilion, which will announce its final phase that same day.

So highly-anticpated is the event that it has sold out, accoriding to Feliciano's website; free tickets were issued in advance online and at the Levitt Pavilion box office, beginning July 8.

Feliciano is a name that is synonymous with music, the Levitt says in a release. It is synonymous with an international presence that has influenced popular music for more than two generations. It is synonymous with a presence that has bridged musical styles in a way that has never been equaled.  Feliciano is recognized as the first Latin Artist to cross over into the English music market, opening the doors for other artists who now play an important role in the American music industry.

Feliciano has been acclaimed by critics around the world as “The Greatest Living Guitarist.” He’s been awarded over 45 Gold and Platinum records; he has won 19 Grammy nominations, earning nine Grammy Awards, including the LARAS Award for Lifetime Achievement. Feliciano’s musical career has been immortalized with a Star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame and New York City has honored him by re-naming Public School 155 in East Harlem, “The Jose Feliciano Performing Arts School.” The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre, an ancient and prestigious Papal Order of the Church has Knighted him and he’s received a Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut, for his musical, as well as humanitarian contributions to the world.

Being constantly in demand, Feliciano enjoys playing with many of the top symphonic orchestras including the London Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. He appears on major television shows worldwide; having done a number of his own specials and his music has been featured on television, in films and on the stage.

Born blind in Lares, Puerto Rico,  Feliciano came to New York as a child, and launched his meteoric career in Greenwich Village. Fifty years later, he continues to feel humble with all the successes he has had and remarkably, insists that he has just started to share his talents with the world.

The Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts produces one of the largest and longest-running free outdoor festivals in the nation, in a unique open-air setting located along the banks of the Saugatuck River. The Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts is dedicated to providing free and abundant access to the performing arts, presenting a dynamic and diverse constellation of established and emerging artists, all of whom are compensated, and preserving a beautiful outdoor community destination where people of all ages and backgrounds are always welcome to enjoy the arts, enjoy nature, and enjoy each other.

Established by the Westport community in 1973, the Levitt Pavilion remains an independent 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization and has welcomed more than 1.5 million people and counting.

Here's the post about the new pavilion from the Levitt's website:

A NEW LEVITT PAVILION
Every season the Pavilion provides over 50 nights of live arts and entertainment free of charge to an audience totaling over 50,000 – from Westport and more than thirty neighboring communities and beyond!
To date, the Pavilion has welcomed over 1.5 MILLION guests under the stars - and we are preparing to welcome the next million.
As designed by Westporter Peter Cadoux, Principal of Peter Cadoux Architects, P.C., our new pavilion will feature greatly improved facilities and amenities for audiences and artists alike. Our new building will have a covered stage with vastly updated technical abilities, furthering our capacity to attract world-class artists as well as to support emerging ones.
The enhanced park will feature an improved RiverWalk and picnic groves, an info booth and community hospitality center outfitted with food services and indoor restrooms - all of which will feature universal access.
The Levitt Pavilion is already an anchor for our community and economy; delivering both immediate and lasting benefits; profoundly and positively affecting our patrons, participants and partners. This new Levitt Pavilion will allow us to increase our outreach and expand our services.
This will be our shared home for the 21st century, ready and able to serve the next generation and beyond.  While we were able to provide all of the funds to guarantee completion of construction for a Summer 2014 season, our capital campaign is still underway.  Now is the time to join it.
If you would like more information about these plans, or would like to learn more about the development efforts underway, please contact Carleigh Welsh at Carleigh@westportct.gov or 203-226-7600.
