Hartford Stage Company is presenting two plays in repertory this fall, La Dispute and Macbeth, and for one cast member, teenager Eric Murphy, the idea of repertory means juggling not two plays but theater, school and more. Amid the run of Macbeth, which is getting strong reviews, the Farmington Valley Times caught up with Murphy:

Sometimes five days a week, Maggie Murphy drives her 13-year-old son Eric back and forth from their Avon home to the Hartford Stage, the distinguished regional theatre of the state’s capital.

Eric Murphy is currently starring as the Son of Macduff in the Hartford Stage’s production of Macbeth.

As part of the theatre’s 50th Anniversary Season, Macbeth has been running in repertoire with the French dark comedy, La Dispute, since mid-November.

The eighth grader at Avon Middle School auditioned for the part in July and since then has been deep in rehearsals and performances.

Aside from the pressure of taking on a professional show, learning the middle English required for a Shakespearean classic was a task, but Eric said it’s been a great experience.

“It was a lot to tackle at the beginning,” said the precocious teenager. “The experience of doing Shakespeare, it’s something I’ve always wanted to try, and working with all of the professional actors, it’s been great exposure.”

Eric is one of only two children in the show, which is a major step in his career as he has primarily worked in show’s featuring a lot of other child actors.

Over the last two months, Eric has been juggling performances with school work and the social life all 13-year-olds have. He said it hasn’t always been easy. Sometimes he has to miss classes in order to do student matinees at the theatre; where students take field trips to see the show during the day.

“I can get annoyed sometimes that I can’t always have school, do the play and a social life, but I think I manage it pretty well,” Eric said.
