Mark Boughton to Announce Pick for Lieutenant Governor Tuesday

Mark Boughton to Announce Pick for Lieutenant Governor Tuesday

Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton, a Republican candidate for governor, will announce his pick for lieutenant governor Tuesday morning in Groton, a source said.

Boughton’s campaign put out a press release announcing he will make a major announcement 11 a.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn in Groton, but declined to comment on any specifics.

The source could not confirm who Boughton’s pick would be.

The Hartford Courant reports Boughton will pick Groton mayor Heather Bond Somers as his running mate.

Though Boughton can pick a running mate and endorse a candidate as his pick for lieutenant governor, the GOP primary voters will choose who to pair him with.

In 2010, Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele, a candidate for governor, chose Boughton as his running mate, but Fedele lost the Republican primary to Tom Foley, while Boughton the race for lieutenant governor and the two campaign rivals were paired together.

Groton is the home of former State Rep. Lenny Winkler, who Boughton beat, along with Lisa Wilson-Foley, for the GOP nomination for lieutenant governor in 2010.

State Rep. Penny Bacchiochi, R-Stafford, and former U.S. Comptroller David Walker, a Bridgeport resident, are both exploring runs for lieutenant governor.

Boughton terminated his exploratory committee for governor and officially entered the race Jan. 7.
