Connecticut Lawmakers DeLauro, Esty Rip Cut in SNAP Benefits

Congress moved one step closer Wednesday to cutting SNAP benefits for the second time in less than three months. With support from both parties, the $1 trillion Farm Bill passed the House of Representative 251-166 Wednesday, along with a proposed $8 billion reduction to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. Two Connecticut lawmakers issued harsh criticisms of Congress on Wednesday for what the liberal legislators see as the gutting of a vital social safety net. “Congress has lost its way. Tom Foley is Officially In the Race for Governor

Prepared with a long wish list of what he’d do as the state’s chief executive, Tom Foley announced Wednesday that he’s running again for governor. Foley, a former U.S. Ambassador to Ireland and the Republican Party’s gubernatorial nominee in 2010, formed an exploratory committee for the post in September. Foley said in months of touring Connecticut, he had met people dissatisfied with the state’s prospects. He spoke of rising numbers of people leaving the state, deteriorating infrastructure, and of Gov. Dannel P. Gallup State of the States: Connecticut's Democratic Lean is 11th Strongest

Connecticut's Democratic lean was the 11th strongest among the 50 states in 2013 -- the 12th strongest when the District of Columbia is included -- in Gallup's annual "State of the States survey, which measures how many voters identify with one of the two major political parties.
