Bridgewater Designer Marks Earth Day
Hayden Panettiere, Rachel McAdams, Edward Norton, Adran Grenier, Emily VanCamp, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Bosworth are some of the “eco-conscious Hollywood celebrities” who’ll be receiving a green swag bag on Earth Day this year. Included in the bag will be a three-inch silk cuff bracelet by Bridgewater jewelry designer Alexis Gopal.
The bracelets are made out of recycled silk sari fabric, with a hand-sewn border of Swarovski Crystals, says Gopal, a former internist, “Making the cuffs was labor intensive,” she says, “but I love that I’m repurposing fabrics that would otherwise go to waste. I also wanted to bring attention to the fact that earth awareness is a global effort by contributing a cross-cultural piece.”
Gopal took an unusual route to her thriving jewelry-making career. A graduated of Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, she worked for 15 years as an internist in private practice in Milford and Danbury. After a divorce in 2004, she realized that for the sake of her two young daughters, she could not continue her demanding schedule. She established Alexis Gopal Jewelry in 2006.
You don’t have to be a celebrity to wear a Gopal piece. Her jewelry is featured at The Silo in New Milford and at Tangies in Seymour. Or you can take a look at the whole collection, which includes bracelets, earrings, necklaces and rings, at alexisgopal.com. (The sari bracelet goes for $375.)
And let's not forget—Mother’s Day is round the corner!
