Two Women Face 11-14 Years in Shoreline Gifting Tables Sentencing

Donna Bello leaves court in Hartford with her husband Joel Schiavone, left, and her attorney Norm Pattis.

Two women convicted in February in the Women’s Gifting Table case may face 11 to 14 years in jail, with the government pushing for a “substantial” sentence and their attorneys saying it’s unwarranted.

Jill Platt and Donna Bello, both of Guilford, are scheduled to appear before Judge Alvin W. Thompson in U.S. District Court in Hartford to be sentenced Monday afternoon, nearly six months after the end of a 17-day trial that saw more than 50 witnesses and resulted in guilty verdicts on every count.

The government’s presentence report used various factors and sentencing guidelines to recommend 135 to 168 months, court documents say. Both women are seeking the option of a non-guideline sentence, which could offer a more lenient ruling.

Platt and Bello may also be required to pay $38,000 in restitution to six women who requested it after a government offer to victims.

The government estimates in the documents that at least 1,000 women were involved and that Bello caused a tax and fraud loss of more than $2.7 million, a statement her attorney is fighting.

Sentencing memorandums for Platt and Bello say the sentence proposed in the government’s presentence report is unjustified, citing the pair’s goals and histories of helping others and lack of intentions to commit fraud.

They also mention a separate case in which a woman received a non-guideline sentence of 18 months in jail after being convicted of securities fraud, receiving a sentencing proposal of 360 months, causing a $400 million loss and accruing 250 victims.
