Here Come the Lorikeets!
A new kid-friendly exhibit at The Maritime Aquarium opens just in time for Memorial Day weekend. The exhibit features about a dozen varieties of lorikeet, colorful medium-sized parrots nativ to the South Pacific (Southeast Asia, eastern Australia and Polynesia). In their natural habitats the birds feed on the nectars of various blossoms and fruits.“But in The Maritime Aquarium exhibit, our visitors will provide the nectar,” says Judith Bacal, the Aquarium’s exhibits director. “You can purchase a small cup of nectar before you go into the exhibit, and the lorikeets will land on your hand, or your arm, or even your head to get to your nectar. We like to say you can ‘Get Close’ at The Maritime Aquarium. Well, you can’t get closer than having a bird on your shoulder.”
Entry into “Lorikeets” will be free with Aquarium admission. There will be a small fee for the nectar cups.
