Seymour Teen With Brain Tumor to Get 'Promising' Treatment; Funds Being Raised

A scavenger hunt is being planned to help raise funds for a brave Seymour High School cheerleader continuing to battle a brain tumor.

The Seymour Land Trust has teamed up with Poeta Strong, a group formed to offer both emotional and financial support for the family of Nina Poeta, the 17-year old diagnosed last November with a brain tumor.

Poeta, according to close family friend Elizabeth Pisano, recently underwent a delicate brain surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Doctors will soon perform a three-hour MRI on Poeta, to see if the surgery reduced the size of the tumor, Pisano said. Pisano said Poeta was accepted at Sloan-Kettering to undergo a “promising medical treatment,” for which Poeta was a “perfect candidate.”

“Nina has been very brave in her treatments,” Pisano said.

In the meantime, Pisano said the town has continued to rally around Nina and her family, by holding various fundraising events to help with costly medical bills. A fund set up online last November has since raised more than $78,000.

The latest event, the scavenger hunt, is scheduled for 6 to 11:30 p.m. June 13, starting at the Seymour Land Trust, 13 Chatfield St. Teams comprised of 2-6 are asked to sign up online

A $20 donation is requested.
