Diptyque Opens its First Shop in New England in Westport
Have you heard? The famous Parisian maker of scented candles and luxe unisex perfumes, Diptyque, has opened a shop on Main Street in Westport. You probably know their iconic scented candles from Nordstrom, Blue Mercury and other high-end stores, but what fun to have a whole shop full of their distinctive candles, exotic perfumes, home fragrances and body-care products.
The iconic candles, with the distinctive black-and-white labels, come in 45 different scents—plus limited-edition Rosa Mundi for Valentine’s Day. Best-sellers at the Westport shop right now are Baies, Figuier, Tuberuse and Feu de Bois, says Manager Dee Livingston. Other home fragrances include room sprays, hourglass and electric diffusers and elegant scented medallions for drawer or linen closet.
There’s also an impressive selection of eaux de parfums, eaux de toilettes and colognes—21 in all—in floral, fruity, spicy, woody and herbal scents; all are unisex. (Most popular in Westport? “L’Ombre dans l’Eau and Philosykos,” says Livingston.) A few of the parfums come as solids in very cool little shiny-black “zamak” cases engraved with the Diptyque oval. They’re perfect for quick touch-ups—and easily slip into the pocket of your skinniest skinny jeans! “They make a gorgeous gift,” Livingston says.
The shop’s Art of Body Care line includes soaps, body butters, bath oils, hand lotions and shower gel, all paraben- and phthalate-free.
Diptyque was started in 1961 by three Parisian friends—an interior designer, a painter and a theater-set designer—in the 5th arrondissment of Saint-Germain des Pres. It began as a purveyor of fabrics and decorative home items— “a kind of stylish bazaar where one found surprising articles unmatched in Paris, mined and conveyed home by the trio over the course of their travels,” according to the company website. Scented candles were part of the mix from the beginning, and personal fragrances added in 1968.
The Westport Diptyque is the first in New England; there are only six others in the U.S., in New York, Chicago and California. There are many Diptyque stores in France (five in Paris, incuding the original at 34 Boulevard St. Germain), four in London, and others in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Milan, Qatar and UAE.
One caveat: Diptyque is not for the faint of wallet. A 2.5-ounce bottle of eau de parfum goes for $145, the candles are $60 each. Or you can just go in a sniff to your heart's content. Hey, it beats a trip to Paris in January!
