Eero Saarinen, Isamu Noguchi Pieces Highlight Nest Egg's Meriden Auction Saturday

Eero Saarinen for Knoll: 'Womb' chair & ottoman.

Nest Egg Auctions of Meriden is starting the fall auction season with a strong selection of fine art, rare books, antiques and jewelry, much of it from the last century. Highlights of the Saturday (Sept. 14) auction include a Dieter Waekerlin for Behr sideboard, an Eero Saarinen “womb chair" and ottoman for Knoll, and an Isamu Noguchi Cyclone side table for Knoll.

“The market for mid-century art and furnishings is still very strong,” says auctioneer Ryan Brechlin in a release detailing the auction, for which doors open at 10 a.m. The gavel goes down at 2 p.m. “Dealers, galleries, and collectors are already showing a lot of interest in this auction”

Items include a James Abbott McNeill Whistler etching of the sculptor Drouet. The early and fine impression is expected to bring between $1,000 and $3,000. An antique human medical skeleton found in a local artists’ estate is estimated at $1,000 to $3,000. One of the great estate finds to cross the block will be an original 1930s era Gibson Mastertone Florentine banjo. It was discovered under a bed, and is expected to bring between $5,000 and $10,000.

“I love my job for two reasons” says Brechlin. “Discovering unique and valuable items, and helping people sell them for great prices.”

Modern design and mid-century furniture in the auction include the Dieter Waekerlin for Behr sideboard, estimated at $2,000 to $4,000, the Eero Saarinen “womb chair" and ottoman, estimated at $500 to $1,000, and the Isamu Noguchi Cyclone side table, estimated at $1,000 to $2,000.

A collection of works by French artist Jean Jansem are expected to land between $5,000-$10,000.

This auction also brings a great selection of Continental porcelain to the market. Lots include Marcolini Meissen, Ludwigsburg, Limoges, Dresden, Royal Vienna, Hochst and more. The Meissen porcelain “Capture of the Tritons” figurine is estimated to bring between $1,000 and $2,000.

The auction also includes estate jewelry, sterling silver from Tiffany & Co., a World War II Japanese flag and military archive, beautiful Chinese silver and enamel owl, a Swiss music box and many more estate-fresh lots.

Preview for the auction were held Thursday (Sept. 12) and today, from noon to 5 p.m. Doors open at 10 a.m. Saturday and the auction begins at 2 p.m.
