First Night Celebrations
Ring in the New Year at a First Night celebration in Connecticut. The alcohol-free community-based parties are chock-full of family fun and entertainment.
First Night Hartford will celebrate its 22nd year of ushering in the New Year with more than 40 events planned at 20 venues around the city. Two spectacular fireworks displays will explode over Bushnell Park at 6 p.m. and midnight. Wristbands may be purchased in advance. Admission $10; youth 2 to15 $2, children under 2 free. First Night Westport/Weston has taken place for the past 17 years at venues in downtown Westport. Park and walk or take a horse-drawn carriage ride, which will be available all night. The celebration will include the U.S. premiere of the animated Chinese film “The Legend of Silk Boy,” at the Seabury Center, 45 Church Lane, Westport at 3 p.m. Actor Jackie Chan will be among the celebrity voices in the movie. Other events begin at 4 p.m. and end by 9:30 p.m. with a fireworks display on the Jesup green. Entertainment will continue at Toquet Hall until midnight. First Night buttons act as your tickets to each event. Buttons cost $15 and may be purchased at local businesses or online at firstnightww.com.
Magic is the theme of First Night Danbury. “A Hat Full of Magic” will run from 4 to 8 p.m. throughout CityCenter Danbury on Main Street. Buttons will provide entrance to events and may be purchased for $5. Other venues taking part will include the Palace Theater, the Danbury Green and the library plaza. Headliner Peter Samelson, a fixture at the long-running off-Broadway show “Monday Night Magic,” will host a vaudeville show at the Palace Theater with kung fu comic Master Lee and singer/songwriter Larkin Grimm. Other events will include music by Celtic roots rock and bagpipe sensation, MacTalla Mor, cabaret performers, arts and craft, storytellers, a 5K run and the “Fire `n’ Ice” fireworks finale.
