Agnes Under the Big Top
The world premiere of Agnes Under the Big Top, a new play by Aditi Brennan Kapil, opens at the Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven on March 2. Eric Ting directs the production, which runs through April 3.
The play follows the journey of modern-day immigrants who arrive in New York City in search of a new life. The story is presented as a magical fable with a circus analogy running through it. The New York City subway is the setting where a group of immigrants, including a Bulgarian ringmaster and his wife, an Indian call-center operator and a Liberian home-care assistant, travel on their way to finding a better life.
Kapil, recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts’ 2009 Distinguished New Play Development Project, drew from her own multicultural heritage to develop the story—she was born in Bulgaria to a Bulgarian mother and Indian father, and raised in Sweden before immigrating to the United States in the 1990s to attend Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn. The play is being produced concurrently at Kapil’s home base, the Mixed Blood Theater in Minneapolis, Minn.
Long Wharf has partnered with three local restaurants—Miya’s Sushi, Thali and Zaroka—to offer a “Dinner and a Show” special. Theater tickets with prix fixe dinner reservations are available for all show performances but must be purchased in advance by March 2.
