The world premiere of Hunger, an interactive play from the Hartford-based Bated Breath Theatre Company, is presented at Real Art Ways in Hartford through Oct. 2.
Not your usual theater experience (although it’s just what you might expect from this cutting-edge arts center), the audience is cleverly immersed in the production with a role of its own to play as submissive observer. It is physically guided through four gallery spaces as the story unfolds, and actively participates in a wine, chocolate and profiterole (provided by Max Downtown) tasting presented by the story's main characters, a husband-and-wife duo of chocolatiers who share their joy of chocolate (pictured, the duo played by Joni Weisfeld, who appears to have been dipped in chocolate, and David McCamish), but who also have an appetite for fame and fortune. The audience moves on to meet another chocolate-obsessed woman dressed in a foil candy wrapper. Through a man, the two women who share him and the same recipe, and lots of chocolate, the play explores how greed and desire have affected the American way of life.
Chantal Bilodeau penned the play; Bated Breath artistic director and founder Helen Kvale directs.
Recommended for ages 18 and up.
