On the Money

Wallingford’s First National bank circa 1922 has been the subject of many a makeover (post office, pharmacy, bookstore) but the latest is the greatest: an American-style eatery called J. Christian’s Restaurant, with a sweeping staircase, stained glass chandeliers and balcony dining. The menu by Jonathan Harris is equally opulent—with a Cajun twist: Spice-rubbed shrimp with creamy Asiago grits, Cab New York strip, house-made cavatelli with mascarpone, prosciutto di Parma and luscious lumps of cooked lobster out of the shell. Christian Rao, who also owns Café Ra, is the perfectionist who worked tirelessly, hands-on, to turn a forlorn old building into this handsome dining destination.
