Dessert Alert: L's Banana Napoleon

Dessert Alert: L's Banana Napoleon

Sharing great desserts - it just seems like the right thing to do, whether you're at a restaurant table with friends or spreading info along the Internet, like this. We promise to do our share of sharing from now on through this "Dessert Alert" feature, and we welcome suggestions from all of you.

"L" is a tiny little place on Route 64 in Middlebury. It's justifiably popular with the locals for its imaginative, reliably good, sometimes wondrously good fare (our dish of sausage, tomato and pea risotto the other night was superb).

But we're talking dessert here, so let's get right to it. The Banana Napoleon at "L" is so good that . . . well, have you ever seen three people seeming to chat amiably while aggressively running their index fingers across a shared plate as they battle to pick up every last bit of a dessert? I have, and one of the fingers was mine. The ingredients in the dish aren't tricky: bananas, chocolate mousse, caramel, whipped cream and a thin wedge of flaky napoleon pastry (vanilla ice cream may an option, but it wasn't present in ours). The result in any case is divine. In fact, I could see going in to L late some evening after an especially happy or successful day and capping it off by sitting at the bar with a Banana Napoleon and a frosty glass of Champagne. And thou, of course.
