Get Ready for the Souper Bowl!!

 

Ready for the big event this weekend? No, no, not that little football game—we’re talking about Chowdafest! The fourth annual “Souper Bowl” will be held on Saturday (Feb. 4), from 11 to 4, at Bedford Middle School in Westport. For $6, you get a spoon and a ballot ($2 for kids under 12), then slurp your way from booth to booth sampling chowders and soups from 23 of the area’s best eateries.

Chefs from restaurants all over the culinary spectrum are participating. The roster includes Mansion Clam House, Bobby Q’s, Da Pietro’s, The Boathouse, Dunville’s, Tavern on Main, Blue Lemon and River House in Westport, plus Ash Creek Saloon, Southport Brewing and Super Duper Weenie in Fairfield, Ginger Man and Nicholas Roberts in Norwalk and many more. Entrants from as far as Stamford (the Clam Shell) and Shelton (Liquid Lunch) will also be represented.

There are three categories: New England Clam Chowder, Creative Chowders and Bisques and Soups. We’re especially intrigued by some of the less traditional entries—“Cheeseburger Soup” from Bobby Q’s, for example, and Oyster and Pork Belly Chowder from Nicholas Roberts and Liquid Lunch's New England Cheese Steak Chowder (!). And we’re sure to make a beeline for Lentil Soup with Chorizo Jalapeno Hash from River House. (Also, we couldn’t help noticing that there are two New England Patriot chowders, and one New York Giant lobster bisque . . . Could that be a sign?)

Bring the whole family! Kids’ votes count as much as the adults’, and there are free tattoos and stickers and a chef-hat decoration contest.

Best of all, the souper-duper event is run by the Unitarian Church in Westport, which has raised enough to fund over 30,000 meals over the past three years for the Connecticut Food Bank. (Non-perishable food contributions are also welcome.)

So it’s win/win/win!
