Word of Mouth: The Lazy Lobster, Milford
August’s here, and the time is right for a picnic by the sea. The great thing about Milford’s Lazy Lobster—just 30 feet away from Walnut Beach—is that they will help you make it special. BYOB (there’s no corkage fee) and place settings; the restaurant will provide tables and chairs (for $10) and, of course, the menu (a damn fine one, by the way). They’ll even bring it all to the beach for you. We paired the Lazy Lobster Roll ($15.95), its tender, sweet meat piled high on a crunchy, buttered baguette, with a large cup of homemade New England clam chowder ($5.95) loaded with clams—there’s little potato filler here. Sides of succulent corn on the cob (native in season) and Auntie Lee’s coleslaw (chopped, not shredded)—both $2.50—completed our feast. But if none of that appeals, there’s also Maine lobster (1 to 3 pounds, or larger with 48 hours’ notice), steamers, peel ’n’ eat shrimp by the bucket (steamed, iced or Cajun-style), lobster bisque, the Krusty Crab Cake—and for crustacean-phobes, baby-back ribs dry-rubbed for 48 hours and slow-cooked ($20.95 rack, $11.95 half-rack). Should you prefer a no-fuss, no-muss repast, cop a squat inside the Lobster’s glass-fronted café—nothing fancy, though there are a few shelves of gourmet foods and gifts for sale—or on the nautically themed patio. (In general, the restaurant’s own tableware consists of paper plates, plastic cutlery and pint-size cups and paper towels for napkins.) Need dessert? Check out the fab Walnut Beach Creamery just across the street. 6 Broadway, Milford, (203) 283-1864 (thelazylobsterrestaurant.com). Open through mid-October, Tues. through Sun. noon-9.
