A Tavern for Monroe

Well-known restaurateur Scott Beck of Fairfield is getting back in the game this month with a new restaurant—this time in Monroe—called Tavern. Beck, who owns the acclaimed Match Restaurant and The Loft martini bar in South Norwalk, is doing something a little different this time. Tavern will be a more casual, family-friendly place “in a really cool and fun tavern atmosphere,” says Beck, “with great comfort food and a good-sized beer menu.”

Jack Daniels was a major design influence apparently. No, it’s not what you’re thinking! The walnut-topped bar is fronted with barrel staves from old Jack Daniels whiskey barrels, and in another room rounds made from barrel tops cover the walls and ceiling. There are also distressed black leather accents “reminiscent of an old leather jacket,” says Beck.

The menu at Tavern will include burgers, salads and sandwiches, chili and fried chicken, he says, as well as ribs and assorted mini gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches.

Derrick Lee, one of Beck’s original partners at Match and its general manager in the early years, will be GM of the new operation. Beck and Lee hope to be open by Monday.

You can pay them a visit at tavernmonroe.com.
