Pears—the most popular being Anjou, Bartlett, Bosc, Comice, Seckel and Packham—are among the tastiest gifts of the autumn season; in fact, their cream-colored flesh has been called “the gift of the gods.” This time of year, area chefs are hard at work coming up with new and innovative ways to serve them.

Begin your meal at Pond House Café in West Hartford (860/231-8823) with a roasted-pear salad, an Anjou pear stuffed with chicken, sitting atop a salad of spinach, arugula, dried cranberries, almonds, Gorgonzola cheese and raspberry vinaigrette, adorned with a cinnamon stick.

Enjoy the pear in liquid form at the Willimantic Brewing Company in Willimantic (860/423-6777) by ordering a “Pear and Tonic,” which uses Westford Hill Distillers’ Pear William eau de vie.

The Black Sheep in Niantic (860/739-2041) serves up a chic pear martini, a blend of Absolut Pears (a pear-flavored vodka introduced in 2007), St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur and lime juice.

Ondine in Danbury (203/746-4900) offers “Caneton Rôti,” an entrée of ebony-roasted duckling topped with Bartlett pear slices and blackberry sauce, and accompanied by wild rice.

For a light and healthy treat—pears are rich in antioxidants—visit Méli-Mélo Restaurant in Greenwich (203/629-6153) for a tasty all-natural pear sorbet made with fresh Anjou pears.

Take the Cake in Guilford (203/453-1896) creates a lovely pear tart that serves up to 12, made with a shortbread cookie crust, a frangipane (almond-based) filling and ripe pears, topped with an apricot glaze and cranberries.

Pears are getting a food makeover all across Connecticut and are worth a trip to sample and savor while they’re at the peak of their flavor.
