Weekend Discovery: Mansfield Drive-In Theatre & Marketplace
After the beach, I don't know if there's anything that more says "summer" to me than a drive-in theater. Every time I see one, I think of the old one that used to be in Milford that I went to on numerous occasions—with my family, with friends, on dates . . . just something very "romantic," about the setting. I guess I always think of John Travolta crooning about Sandy while on a swing in front of a drive-in screen ("Stranded at the drive-in, branded a fool, What will they say, Monday at school . . . ").
Anyway, as we slide deeper into September, the drive-in is an ideal place to enjoy one last gasp of summer, and no better place to do that than the Mansfield Drive-In. I wrote about a "Being There" visit there back in June 2010, and not much has changed in the past year. There are still three big screens showing double features after dark (although only on Fridays and Saturdays now that it's after Labor Day), the projectors still uses 35 mm film and the concession stand still offers all sorts of munchies, including popcorn.
The facility also continues to host an indoor flea market every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., which is year-round, rain or shine.
So if you're looking for something to do and want to savor the final days of the season, pack up the car and head out—I promise no one will brand you a fool for being stranded there on a Saturday night.
