Description

Art of Latin America: Identity & Culture

The Latin Network for the Visual Arts, in celebration of its 10th anniversary, presents “Art of Latin America: Identity & Culture” featuring contemporary sculpture, paintings, photographs and mixed media from its Permanent Collection. An opening reception at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 24, will be accompanied by a presentation and discussion. The show is sponsored by the Center for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity at Connecticut College.

The Latin American Art presented in this exhibit, curated by Julia Pavone, is rooted in the myriad indigenous cultures that inhabited the Americas before European colonization began in the late 15th century. Throughout the centuries following European contact, Latin America underwent sweeping cultural and political changes greatly influencing the visual arts. As Latin America searched for its own identity, its contemporary artists looked to their past, as well as to their popular culture, religion, socio-political conditions, and to their personal perspectives, to create art as we see it today.
