Thursday, Feb. 21 Author Talk: Carol Wallace—To Marry an English Lord, 7 – 8:30 p.m. Are you Downton Abbey crazy like the rest of us? Come meet author Carol Wallace as she discusses the novel she co-wrote, To Marry an English Lord (originally published in 1989, reprinted in 2012). Hear about young American heiresses, cold-shouldered by an entrenched aristocracy that scorned new money, so they looked across the sea to find husbands among titled young Englishmen who were long on status but short on cash. From the Gilded Age until 1914, more than 100 American heiresses invaded Britannia and swapped dollars for titles--just like Cora Crawley, Countess of Grantham, the first of the Downton Abbey characters Julian Fellowes was inspired to create after reading To Marry an English Lord. It is filled with vivid personalities, gossipy anecdotes, grand houses and a wealth of period details – a social history at its liveliest and most accessible. No charge. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Registration encouraged. Wilton Library, 137 Old Ridgefield Road, Wilton; www.wiltonlibrary.org; (203) 762-3950. |
