Lay Low

LAY LOW is the alter-ego of Icelandic singer/songwriter Lovísa Elísabet Sigrúnardóttir.

Born in London to a Sri Lankan father and Icelandic mother, LAY LOW’s musical abilities stretch as far as her geographical heritage. Starting out as a pianist and bass guitar player; she has jammed on keyboards and synthesizers with Benny Crespo’s Gang, found her voice in blues folk and a little honky tonk bop collaborating with producers such as Liam Watson. Although her new material is taking on a new trip hop twist, LAY LOW’s distinct musical journey can still be felt at its roots, producing a honed yet experimental sound that is all her own.

Vocally LAY LOW combines a rich chocolate sound with a sweet cinnamon rasp and a sip of whisky to take the edge off. Her live shows have seen her reach round and hug a room of 200 people using only her voice in acapella. Seeing LAY LOW perform is unique, musically playful, she spins new yarns out of her songs, exudes warmth and radiates sincerity that amounts to a profoundly personal experience.

“Iceland’s new dark pop princess.” MTV Iggy

Iceland’s Soley Stefansdottir, or just Soley, has caused quite a stir in 2012. Since her first solo release ‘Theater Island EP’ in 2010 and the follow-up album ‘We Sink’ in 2011, she has built an international reputation and devoted fanbase with her delicate melodies and beautifully dark lyrics. The soundtrack to lucid dreams and childhood nightmares, Soley wouldn’t be out of place in the dark fairytale world of Tim Burton.

Studying classical piano as a youngster and writing music as a teenager, she entered Icelandic Art Academy in 2007. It was during this time that she sang and played with Icelandic favourites Seabear and Sin Fang. Her output as a solo artist was greeted almost immediately with feverish enthusiasm. At home her album and EP scored top marks and rave reviews in Iceland’s biggest newspapers plus nominations in Icelandic Music Awards. Her recent musical contribution to Icelandic theater production ‘Breaking News’, a portrayal in puppetry of our modern obsession with the media, was received with huge critical acclaim.

Internationally she has received praise from tastemaker bloggers and mavens and is started to breakthrough into a wider consciousness – she recently won MTV Iggy’s Artist of the Week. Soley continues to build an extraordinary buzz online through YouTube and Facebook, with music lovers around the world claiming her as their discovery.

Svavar Knútur

Minimalist Icelandic Singer/songwriter Svavar Knútur follows in the footsteps of such simple but elegant songwriters as Nick Drake, Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Kris Kristofferson, by preferring simplicity and serenity in his personal style.

A bit of a clash with the traditional modern icelandic style of busy arrangements and flowery pop, Svavar's simple, but elegant, performances conjures up feelings of beautiful solitude and grace. A feeling of happiness through adversity.

Svavar Knútur has in the recent years seen his star steadily rise both in Iceland and abroad, playing around the world to growing success. Svavar has played at SXSW and NXNE music and film festivals and also made an appearance on BBC world service.

Svavar is also the first recipient of the Icelandic Anna Pálína Árnadóttir memorial award for folk music excellence in Iceland.
