The class will focus on the blues and blues progression in early and modern jazz styles. Dr. O’Neil will introduce beginning to intermediate guitarists to jazz improvisation, style and harmony through a close examination of the blues and its use as the foundation for early and modern jazz studies. Examples and techniques from jazz greats will be covered and the use of the blues progression as a basis for other standards and tunes will be explored. A jam session will conclude the master class. In addition to teaching at Community Music School, Kevin O’Neil is an adjunct professor at Tunxis Community College. As a performer, he enjoys being a freelance guitarist and has recorded many CDs through the years with Anthony Braxton, Klezmer clarinetist David Krakauer, saxophonist Steve Lehman and others. The class is FREE, however, reservations are requested and students should bring a small practice amp with their guitar.
