Modeling the Art and Engineering of Roman Aqueducts with Legos™

Average Joe Photo Show

Storrs, CT - Whether savoring a refreshing dip on a sweltering day, enjoying the calming beauty of the ocean’s waves, or the quenching sensation of an ice cold drink, water is no more on our minds than in the heat and humidity of the summer. Water is the theme of the UConn Libraries’ Summer Art exhibits, which begin July 14 and end on October 24.
The first exhibit, “Modeling the Art and Engineering of Roman Aqueducts with Legos™,” features a series of aqueducts constructed of Legos™ by UConn Professor of Geology Gary Robbins. The constructions simulate ancient Roman structures that were used to transport water. The second, “Average Joe Photo Show,” is a combination photography exhibition and philanthropic project, which showcases images of water and the human figure taken with cell phone or tablet, and benefits an international water organization.
To provide water to crowded cities throughout the ancient Roman world, the Romans built some 600 aqueducts. Not only were the aqueducts marvels of engineering and hydraulics but also wondrous works of architecture and art. The original Lego™ models on display exemplify some of the diversity in design of the ancient Roman aqueducts. The models demonstrate how the aqueducts worked and why their ruins still evoke a sense of awe.

The “Average Joe Photo Show” originated at the Lori Warner Gallery in Chester, CT and was the brainchild of friends Lori Warner and Rebecca Steiner. The exhibition features 234 eclectic photographs taken in Connecticut and as well as far-flung corners of the world by photographers, both professional and amateur. A portion of the proceeds from sales benefit, an organization providing access to safe water and sanitation to people worldwide.

A public reception will take place on Thursday, August 28 from 5-6:30 p.m. in Homer Babbidge Library.
