Description

Westport Historical Society Presents: Circus Fun- August 11- August 14

WHS’s Circus Workshop will find the kids making their own Calder circus, making mobiles – the art form Calder invented – and learning about the late artist, who had a home and studio in Roxbury, Conn. Calder’s Circus, created in Paris in the late 1920s, consists of wire models of circus figures – trapeze artists, lion tamers, clowns – who perform tricks when a “ringmaster” pulls strings attached to their bodies. It’s on permanent exhibit at the Whitney Museum of American Art. The kids will also learn about P. T. Barnum and circuses that used to make summer stops in Westport, play circus games outdoors, including water balloons, hula hoops and relay races and, on the last day, will perform their own circus show for their parents.

Elizabeth DeVoll, the Society’s education director, said the workshop is designed to keep schoolchildren mentally active during the summer months while providing opportunities for creative play with peers. The program is appropriate for ages 5 through 12.

The cost is $200 for members and $235 for non-members and is limited to 15 children.

Call early to register at 203-222-1424.
