· D.J. Sparr composed Precious Metal: A Concerto for Flute and Winds to showcase the versatility as well as the delicate strength of the flute. Its three movements are based on the three metals of which the flute is made – silver, platinum, and gold – but as soloist Jake Fridkis (Yale School of Music ’14) will show, the flute can be much more than the sum of its parts.
· Thomas C. Duffy’s Century Shouts: An Urban March was commissioned in 2012 for the centennial of New Haven’s Neighborhood Music School. This composition is a crossover march incorporating elements of New Orleans second-line street bands, salsa bands, and the angular rhythms and metallic sounds of the “contemporary urban landscape.”
· Short and Sweet is the newest work from nationally renowned young composer Stephen Feigenbaum (Yale School of Music ’13), and his third collaboration with the Yale Concert Band.
