Success Stories: The Zanger Company

Because East Hartford native Gloria Smith believes in letting the universe decide some things, she has over the years worked in teaching, sales and manufacturing. “I always keep an open mind and heart, transitioning when the time is right,” she says. In 1989, she started importing handcrafted stoneware from Poland. The Zanger Company (Smith and three employees) has been distributing elaborate sponge-painted plates, platters, cups, saucers and bakeware to collectors and retailers across the country ever since. Smith sold “millions of pieces” of pottery on QVC for more than eight years (earning $13 million in her most profitable year). These days, Smith, who will be 65 in December, has decided to throttle back and sell direct to customers in her Suffield warehouse: “I’m not attached to money,” she says. “It’s just time to come home, step back and enjoy life.”
