Drinking It In: The Judges' Top 10

Vern Williams

When all was said and done, when the last wine was swirled, sniffed, tasted, and scored, we asked the judges of our first-ever Connecticut Wine Tasting to pick the best of the best. More than how the wines they sampled stacked up against one another, we wanted to know which ones knocked their socks off.

All four judges dutifully complied with our request to list their top three favorites out of all 84 wines. And while some of their favorites scored high enough across the board to win first, second or third place honors in their category, some of their choices were surprising. Two wines wowed more than one judge, so we ended up with a true Top Ten:

TOP TEN: The wine judges’ personal best

1. Priam Late Harvest Riesling (dessert; chosen by three judges)
2. Sharpe Hill Vineyard Reserve Chardonnay (dry white; chosen by two judges)
3. Jones 2010 Pinot Gris (dry white)
4. Saltwater Farm 2009 Estate Chardonnay (dry white)
5. Miranda Cayuga White (other white)
6. Stonington 2008 Cabernet Franc (red)
7. Saltwater Farm 2008 Estate Cabernet Franc (red)
8. Sharpe Hill Cabernet Franc (red)
9. Sharpe Hill Select Late Harvest (dessert)
10. Priam Late Harvest Gewurztraminer (dessert)
