HOW OUR WINNERS ARE CHOSEN: For 2012, we sent questionnaires to every dentist licensed in Connecticut—over 2,800—asking them to recommend a dentist to whom they would send a loved one for care in seven categories. We received 550 completed questionnaires (20 percent), a very good return rate. Thus, every dentist listed has been recommended by a significant number of his or her peers—indeed, the only way to make the list is through these peer recommendations. We like to say that every dentist who makes the list is a good one, or at least a recommended one, but not every good dentist makes the list. You should use it as a reference, not the final word, as you search for someone to help you with your dental needs. You must ultimately do your own due diligence in order to decide which dentist is right for you or your loved ones.
DRS. BRENTON LAHEY and JAMISON SCOTTO TREAT PERIODONTAL DISEASE with proven new treatments. Dr. Lahey (right) earned his D.M.D. from Temple University School of Dentistry and trained in periodontics at the University of Louisville. He earned a master’s degree in oral biology and conducted a clinical research study on cancellous block bone grafts. Dr. Scotto (left) earned his D.M.D. from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine and further trained in periodontics and implants at UConn Health Center. He volunteered for the Connecticut Special Olympics and in Peru’s Amazon rainforest. Both are Diplomates of the American Board of Periodontology. Periodontal disease presents itself uniquely in every patient,” says Dr. Scotto. “The human body is not a static environment. There are a lot of different factors that make people predisposed to periodontal disease.” Dr. Lahey adds that people shouldn’t be resigned to tooth loss as they get older, since lost bone can often be regenerated and gums reattached. “If you follow through with treatment, you can keep your teeth for the rest of your life,” he says.
