DR. KATHLEEN LaVORGNA spent six years in biochemical research before pursuing her childhood interest in medicine. She received a B.A. in biology from Boston University, earned her degree at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and did her internship and residency in surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. She was the first female general surgeon at Norwalk Hospital and is director of the hospital’s trauma service and assistant chairman of the Department of Surgery. She is also the first woman chosen as president of the Connecticut State Medical Society. Dr. LaVorgna is in solo practice, dedicated to following her patients’ care from diagnosis to cure. She recognizes that patients are individuals and have unique needs when facing surgery. “I am a strong believer that surgery is not just about the operation, but helping patients learn why surgery is part of their care and educating them about what to expect,” she says.
