DR. PIETRO A. MEMMO, an interventional physiatrist, brings a rare professional pedigree to his pain management practice: He is one of just a few Connecticut physicians board-certified in both pain management and physical medicine and rehabilitation. He is the only nonsurgical practitioner collaborating with the team of 22 subspecialty-trained orthopedic surgeons at Orthopedic Associates of Hartford.
Dr. Memmo’s philosophy is to provide compassionate care, helping his patients avoid surgery whenever possible by offering treatment that allows them to live pain-free. He strives to provide non-narcotic, nonoperative, conservative care options. For patients with severe pain, he often develops a progressive treatment plan, using stronger medications and customized physical therapy with the ultimate goal of improving their condition so less aggressive measures may provide relief. “I understand my patients have families to take care of and jobs to do. Pain can be debilitating and I try to help them live their lives as normally as possible,” he explains.
With special expertise in spine care for sciatica, spinal stenosis and herniated discs, Dr. Memmo has performed more than 15,000 spinal procedures, including epidurals and nerve blocks, in Orthopedic Associates’ state-of-the-art surgery center, using fluoroscopy to deliver pain-reducing medications. He is also an expert in radiofrequency lesioning, using electrical currents to ablate nerves for chronic-pain relief, an appealing treatment option for arthritic athletes seeking long-lasting results.
Dr. Memmo took an unusual path to medicine: He enrolled in medical school following studies in a Roman Catholic seminary and a corporate banking career. After medical school, he completed an internal medicine internship at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and a residency in physical medicine at the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation and University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He completed his fellowship in spine and sports medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center. “For me being a physician is a bit like being a priest,” he says. “Both call on compassion, really listening and a desire to heal.”
