 ry the little city of Carmel\, California was transformed into a colony of
  artists\, writers\, photographers\, and poets. Often referred to as Carme
 l-by-the-Sea\, this city played a significant role in the history of writi
 ng and art in the United States. This five-week lecture/workshop will focu
 s on the main figures and contributors to this largely undiscovered period
  of American growth in art and literature.<br style='color:rgb(102\,102\,1
 02)\;font-family:helvetica\;line-height:18px\;' /><br />\n	These lectures 
 will feature biographical information on some of the most famous figures i
 n the colony\, and use both period photography and art to bring the mood o
 f the times to life. Some leading figures in the colony include Mary Hunte
 r Austin\, George Sterling\, Upton Sinclair\, and Jack London who is the m
 ost popular author of the day. Whenever artists gather\, sparks are sure t
 o fly\, and the Carmel Colony was no exception!<br style='color:rgb(102\,1
 02\,102)\;font-family:helvetica\;line-height:18px\;' /><br />\n	The progra
 m will explore the personal relationships of key figures in Carmel as well
  as the historical context of the art colony. The San Francisco Earthquake
  of 1906\, a major geological event during this time period\, will also be
  given special emphasis during the lectures.<br /><br />\n	The workshop po
 rtion of each session will feature a hands-on art project suitable for beg
 inners and experienced artists alike. There will be a new medium for each 
 session that is associated with the lecture topic.<br /><br /><b>Week One 
 Lecture: </b>Introduction to the Carmel Art Colony and history of the deve
 lopment. This lecture will also focus on the San Francisco Earthquake and 
 impact on the Carmel Colony\, the State of California\, and the country as
  a whole. We will briefly meet some of the key personalities in the colony
  and set the stage for the coming weeks.<br />\n	Week One Art Project: Col
 lage using newspapers<br /><br /><b>Week Two Lecture:</b> The founders and
  most significant members of the community will be explored in more detail
 . We will discuss personalities such as George Sterling\, Upton Sinclair\,
  Arnold Genthe\, Mary Hunter Austin and others. Jack London will be introd
 uced here\, but more details on his adventures will follow in the proceedi
 ng weeks. <br />\n	Week Two Art Project: TBD<br /><br /><b>Week Three Lect
 ure: </b>Jack London was the most famous American writer of his time\, and
  his presence at the Carmel Art Colony brought fame\, personal intrigue\, 
 and adventure to the area. Thus lecture covers his life at the colony\, al
 ong with the various friendships\, lovers\, and interactions that he had w
 hile at Carmel.<br />\n	Week Three Art Project: TBD<br /><br /><b>Week Fou
 r Lecture:</b> The focus of the fourth week of the lecture is the South Se
 as adventure of Jack London aboard the vessel Snark\, for which he assembl
 ed a crew and sailed the Pacific. <br />\n	Week Four Art Project: TBD<br /
 ><br /><b>Week Five Lecture:</b> Mary Hunter Austin stands as one of the p
 remiere chroniclers of the American West. She was a prominent member of th
 e Carmel Art community and collaborated with famous photographer Ansel Ada
 ms on his book. Her story at the colony is the focus of the final lecture.
  This class also features a wrap up and further details on the history of
