DESCRIPTION:<p>\n	At the turn of the twentieth century the little city of C
 armel\, California was transformed into a colony of artists\, writers\, ph
 otographers\, and poets. Often referred to as Carmel-by-the-Sea\, this cit
 y played a significant role in the history of writing and art in the Unite
 d States. This five-week lecture/workshop will focus on the main figures a
 nd contributors to this largely undiscovered period of American growth in 
 art and literature.<br style='color:rgb(102\,102\,102)\;font-family:helvet
 ica\;line-height:18px\;' /><br />These lectures will feature biographical 
 information on some of the most famous figures in the colony\, and use bot
 h period photography and art to bring the mood of the times to life. Some 
 leading figures in the colony include Mary Hunter Austin\, George Sterling
 \, Upton Sinclair\, and Jack London who is the most popular author of the 
 day. Whenever artists gather\, sparks are sure to fly\, and the Carmel Col
 ony was no exception!<br style='color:rgb(102\,102\,102)\;font-family:helv
 etica\;line-height:18px\;' /><br />The program will explore the personal r
 elationships of key figures in Carmel as well as the historical context of
  the art colony. The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906\, a major geological
  event during this time period\, will also be given special emphasis durin
 g the lectures.<br /><br />\n	The workshop portion of each session will fe
 ature a hands-on art project suitable for beginners and experienced artist
 s alike. There will be a new medium for each session that is associated wi
 th the lecture topic.<br /><br /><b>Week One Lecture: </b>Introduction to 
 the Carmel Art Colony and history of the development. This lecture will al
 so focus on the San Francisco Earthquake and impact on the Carmel Colony\,
  the State of California\, and the country as a whole. We will briefly mee
 t some of the key personalities in the colony and set the stage for the co
 ming weeks.<br />\n	Week One Art Project: Collage using newspapers<br /><b
 r /><b>Week Two Lecture:</b> The founders and most significant members of 
 the community will be explored in more detail. We will discuss personaliti
 es such as George Sterling\, Upton Sinclair\, Arnold Genthe\, Mary Hunter 
 Austin and others. Jack London will be introduced here\, but more details 
 on his adventures will follow in the proceeding weeks. <br />\n	Week Two A
 rt Project: TBD<br /><br /><b>Week Three Lecture: </b>Jack London was the 
 most famous American writer of his time\, and his presence at the Carmel A
 rt Colony brought fame\, personal intrigue\, and adventure to the area. Th
 us lecture covers his life at the colony\, along with the various friendsh
 ips\, lovers\, and interactions that he had while at Carmel.<br />\n	Week 
 Three Art Project: TBD<br /><br /><b>Week Four Lecture:</b> The focus of t
 he fourth week of the lecture is the South Seas adventure of Jack London a
 board the vessel Snark\, for which he assembled a crew and sailed the Paci
 fic. <br />\n	Week Four Art Project: TBD<br /><br /><b>Week Five Lecture:<
 /b> Mary Hunter Austin stands as one of the premiere chroniclers of the Am
 erican West. She was a prominent member of the Carmel Art community and co
 llaborated with famous photographer Ansel Adams on his book. Her story at 
 the colony is the focus of the final lecture. This class also features a w
 rap up and further details on the history of the Carmel community. <br />
