DESCRIPTION:<p>\n	<strong>Music and Dance of Africa and the Caribbean with 
 Sankofa Kuumba at Windsor Historical Society February 9</strong></p>\n<p>
 	On Saturday\, February 9 at 2 p.m. (snow date Sunday\, February 10\, 3 p.
 m. but please call first)\, experience the richness and astonishing beauty
  of African culture through dance\, music\, storytelling\, and art which h
 as flowed from Africa toward the Caribbean and the United States for centu
 ries. Costumed musicians and performers from Hartford&rsquo\;s Sankofa Kuu
 mba Cultural Arts Consortium will take audience members on a journey throu
 gh the African Diaspora\, starting in Africa to honor the ancestors who ca
 me from there.&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>\n	Audience members will be incorporated int
 o the performance\, first by learning a few phrases and commands in an Afr
 ican language.&nbsp\; Stories and songs performed by the group will provid
 e a window into African\, African-Caribbean\, and African-American history
  and culture. Ensemble members\, who always perform wearing traditional Af
 rican garb with traditional instruments\, will demonstrate different rhyth
 ms and sounds of drums and perform some dances.&nbsp\; &nbsp\;After these 
 performances\, audience volunteers may be called on to learn some simple d
 rum rhythms and dance moves.&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>\n	Audience members will leave
  the performance with deeper understanding and appreciation for traditions
  of Africa and the African Diaspora which have become such a central aspec
 t of American culture\, including social and sacred dance\, improvisationa
 l polyrhythmic music\, and bold abstract visual and textile art.&nbsp\; &n
 bsp\;Sankofa Kuumba&rsquo\;s program is designed to draw audience members 
 of different backgrounds closer together.&nbsp\; &nbsp\;Cost for the progr
 am is $6 for adults\, $5 for seniors and students\, and $4 for WHS members
 .&nbsp\; This performance is supported by a Connecticut Humanities grant f
 or Civil War programming.</p>\n<p>\n	The Windsor Historical Society\, foun
 ded in 1921\, invites visitors to explore the people\, places\, and events
  that have shaped Windsor for nearly four centuries.&nbsp\; The Society&rs
 quo\;s museum includes changing and permanent exhibition galleries\; a han
 ds-on history learning center for families\; a research library and manusc
 ript collection housing Windsor photographs\, documents\, ephemera\, and g
 enealogical materials\, a museum shop and two historic houses open to the 
 public--the 1758 Strong-Howard House and the 1767 Dr. Hezekiah Chaffee Hou
 se.&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>\n	The Windsor Historical Society is located at 96 Pali
