 all of 1981 by Robert Buck\, Dennis Drew\, Steven Gustafson\, John Lombard
 o and Natalie Merchant. Jerry Augustyniak joined in 1983. Together with ar
 tists like R.E.M.\, they defined college rock and create the first wave of
  alternative rock bands and what became known as the alternative rock form
 at on FM radio.<br /><br />\n	Writing and performing powerful\, danceable\
 , and socially conscious original material in and around their hometown of
  Jamestown\, NY\, the group toured extensively.<br /><br />\n	In 1987\, th
 e Maniacs recorded and released In My Tribe\, produced by Peter Asher (who
  also produced for James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt)\, this album broke qui
 ckly onto the charts and sold over two millions copies. The album features
  the hit singles\, 'Don't Talk\, Hey Jack Kerouac\, Like the Weather and W
 hat's the Matter Here.' Within months\, the band had already appeared on T
 he Tonight Show\, Late Night with David Letterman and Saturday Night Live.
