Richard Dreyfuss says in portraying real-life characters in which audiences are already somewhat familiar, the trick is the unexpected. “Drama consists of surprises, and you have to give them something new or something deeper. Your job is to make people sit up in their chairs and pay attention.”

Fairfield County Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk

Event Date/Time

Sep 29, 2013
9:00 am

Description

Fairfield County Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk

Hundreds of Fairfield County area residents whose lives have been impacted by pancreatic cancer will join the 3rd Annual Fairfield County Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk on Sunday, September 29th at the Bethel High School Track.

Pancreatic cancer is the nation’s fourth leading cause of cancer deaths. In 2011, more than 43,000 Americans were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and close to 37,000 died of the disease. The overall five-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is six percent. There are no early detection tests, no effective treatments and, unless the cancer is surgically removed in its earliest stages, there is no cure.

When Karen Rowe, Ellen Klaus and Julie Dunn lost loved ones to this disease they knew they had to do something to help change these facts.  Together they have helped to create the Inaugural Fairfield County Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk to benefit The Lustgarten Foundation, the nation’s largest private funder of pancreatic cancer research. 100 percent of every dollar donated to The Lustgarten Foundation goes directly to pancreatic cancer research. In 2013, they asked Jennifer Cathcart to co-chair the event with them. She lost her Grandmother to this horrible disease. The Lustgarten Foundation is America’s largest private foundation dedicated solely to funding pancreatic cancer research. Based in Bethpage, New York, the Foundation supports research to find a cure for pancreatic cancer, facilitates dialogue within the medical and scientific community, and educates the public about the disease through awareness campaigns and fundraising events. The Foundation has provided millions of research dollars and assembled the best scientific minds with the hope that one day, a cure can be found.
