Gallery Talk with artist Graydon Parrish on his work The Cycle of Terror and Tragedy, September 11, 2001
Sep 11, 2013
Join artist Graydon Parrish as he visits the NBMAA and leads a discussion in front of one of his greatest works The Cycle of Terror and Tragedy, September 11, 2001. It was soon after the event in 2001, the Museum’s director, Douglas Hyland, visited Parrish and asked him to submit a proposal to commemorate the tragedy. From 2002 through 2006 the artist worked and reworked the canvas striving for perfection while moving through varied emotions as time passed. The artist will talk about the meanings behind his allegorical work and the path he took to get there.
Parrish graduated from Amherst College, Massachusetts, after studying at the New York Academy of Art. He admires the classical style of painting as exemplified by Raphael, Jacques-Louis David, and William-Adolphe Bouguereau where the viewer can see the direct influence of these masters in his work.
