DR. PHILLIP DICKEY has extensive experience and a broad range of expertise and skills in a specialty where there is no room for error. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, he completed his internship and residency in neurosurgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

He is a solo practicing neurosurgeon in New Haven. “There’s nobody between me and the patient,” he says. This approach allows him to make every decision based on a more precise neurological diagnosis and to have better control of the quality of a patient’s treatment. With a more precise diagnosis, he can design a limited operation and utilize minimally invasive techniques when appropriate. These smaller operations, in his experience, yield better outcomes than large fusion operations recommended by some surgeons. He also performs intracranial surgery for meningioma, acoustic neuroma and pituitary tumors where “the technique is so delicate and precise because nerve tissue is involved.” He has made countless presentations at professional organizations and is prolifically published in medical journals.

In addition to his practice, Dr. Dickey teaches neurosurgery residents at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He sees the opportunity to teach neurosurgical students as a valuable aspect of his career. “I make them better and they make me better,” he says because it keeps him up-to-date on medical advances. “They benefit from my years of experience to help them,” he adds, and they can “transition from books to patients.” Yale is one of only two hospitals in Connecticut that have neurological residency programs. His patients get better care, he notes, because they get more time with physicians who are specializing in their conditions when they’re in the hospital. “The sum is greater than the parts,” he says, and thinks this is a fantastic synergy for all involved.
