You can hear the smile in Nicole Porter-Blake’s voice when she talks about her new husband, Joram.
Nicole and Joram were both born and at the same hospital (Mount Sinai) and raised in Hartford (and at one point, even both lived on Sigourney Street for a short time), and yet they’d never met. Until Sept. 25, 2010, that is, when Nicole decided to go for a run at Weaver High School and Joram approached her as she came off the track to ask her name.
“We literally sat at that track and talked for two hours,” remembers Nicole. “When we finally left he called me an hour after I got home and we went out that night.” The next day it was tennis at Elizabeth Park, then a walk, then a game of basketball.
Two weeks later a giddy Nicole told her mom, “I found the one.”
“I just knew,” says Nicole. “Joram is genuine. He’s hardworking. Honorable. Respectful. All the things people sometimes take for granted but are actually hard to find. I just love him to pieces.”
Still, Nicole jokes that when she first turned and saw her groom-to-be for their “first look” at Hartford City Hall she sassed him with a, “You clean up nice, baby.” Then confides, “He actually looked real sharp.”
After pictures, it was off to The Riverview in Simsbury for a tented outdoor ceremony and a reception that was quite the par-tay. “Both sets of our parents were born in Jamaica, and we like to dance,” says Nicole in a tone that implies she’s got some serious moves in her repertoire.
Rob Alberti's Event Services of Westfield, Mass., set the scene with some knock-’em dead lighting and DJ Juic3 kept the room movin’ all night. Nicole was so in the moment that she nearly forgot to do a planned quick-change with the fitted Essense of Australia gown she had customized so that she could turn it into a short “party dress” once the music started.
When the bride did stop to catch her breath, it was to watch her groom work the room. “Joram is a ball of fun,” says Nicole. “He has such drive, and that pushes me to be a better person … a better woman. It’s just so good to know that I have a partner who will always be there for me, and I for him.”
And now each for their son: Zamir Joram Blake, born Aug. 8, 2014. Welcome, beautiful boy. Mama smiles when she talks about you, too.
