Real Wedding of the Week: Beth and Tom Coltart

bride & groom: Beth & Tom Coltart

wedding date: July 7, 2012

the bride says: Tom and I met through friends at a bonfire on April 18, 2008.  I would like very much to say that it was love at first sight but since my first glimpse of Tom was watching him accidentally fling a burning marshmallow past my face, I will just say that he really got my attention.

Tom redeemed himself by asking for my number and two days later we had our first date. Before we knew it, we became inseparable. Three-and-a-half years later, we were on a vacation to Cape Cod and had stopped at Truro vineyards, in North Truro (way up near the tip of Cape Cod). It is a lovely New England winery settled in a beautifully restored 1830s farmhouse just a half mile from the ocean. It was in that breathtaking setting that Tom decided to propose to me; little did I know that he had been carrying the ring around with him all week waiting for the right moment. I could not have been more surprised or more thrilled, and I very happily said yes.

Our engagement at the winery had been so beautiful that Tom and I wanted to recreate some of that experience and have a vineyard-themed wedding. We chose one of our favorite locations close to our home, Fox Hopyard Golf Club, and held our ceremony on the beautiful wrap-around porch overlooking the grounds. For our “altar” we used large wine barrels that held gorgeous arrangements of flowers and cascading vines. My dress was ivory-champagne colored and the bridesmaids were in sangria (purplish-red), which we also incorporated into the flowers with the help of our amazing florist (Lauren Dassatti, owner of Sweet Peas Florist in Watertown).

We wanted our ceremony to be a very unique, personal family affair. I walked down the aisle to my aunt singing accompanied by a harpist. Our officiant, Zita Christian, really took the time to get to know us so that she could tell our story within our vows and understand the things that we wanted to pledge to one another in front of our friends and families. We included readings from very special family members and continued the vineyard theme with a ‘blending of the wines’ ritual. The closeness and intimacy of the day was really felt by everyone and was the perfect start to our life together.

While our guests attended a cocktail hour inside the restaurant, Tom and I, along with our wedding party, wandered the grounds for our photo shoot. Our talented photographer (Theresa Mieczkowski, Snapshots Photography in Woodbury) took advantage of the winding paths and open meadow for some of our wedding photos, which we wanted to keep as relaxed and candid as possible. The stone walls and giant old trees at Fox Hopyard were the perfect backdrop to capture our memories.

Our reception was under the large pavilion, a gorgeous white wooden structure on a cobblestone foundation. Tables were named for types of wines (Chardonnay, Merlot, etc.) and were adorned with large wine bottles (which we cut the bottoms off of) placed over candles. Our florist made wreaths of lavender, thistles and greens for around the bottles, and all of the tables were decorated with gorgeous arrangements. More large wine barrels and vintage décor helped to keep our New England winery theme along with a large handmade “Coltart vineyard” sign.

After the introductions and first dances, our guests enjoyed a buffet supper and danced the night away thanks to our fabulous DJ as well as a live performance by some very special people. For dessert we had beautifully decorated tables for cupcake stations and a candy bar with vintage glass jars full of old-style penny candy and confections. Favors were etched wine glasses with our saying, “Eat, drink and be married.”

Our wedding was everything that Tom and I wanted, and more. It was a beautiful day with family and friends filled with laughter and tears, and we set off for our honeymoon in Hawaii very happy and relaxed. Our daughter Emerson was born nine months later; making our first year of marriage even more special.
