Kathryn Hays has been chasing the water for years.
The retired actress — perhaps best known for the roughly 38 years she spent as Kim Hughes on the soap opera “As the World Turns” — has always wanted to live in a home with sweeping views of the water. So when she came upon the home at 105 Battery Park Drive in Bridgeport’s Black Rock section in 2004, she wasn’t put off by what a “mess” it was.
She was able to see past the holes that been punched in many of the wall or what looked to be a hatchet imprint in the refrigerator. She was not put off by the general sense of disrepair that saturated the building.
“It was falling apart,” Hays said. “The whole place looked like it had been attacked.”
Yet that didn’t deter her. Instead, she looked through all that to the fact that the house was right on Long Island Sound. It was just want she wanted. So Hays bought the house and completely renovated it, gutting and rebuilding most of the rooms, constructing the luxurious great room where a stone porch used to be, adding almost all new flooring and making a wide array of other improvements.
The result is a 2,806 square-foot ranch-style house with spectacular water views. “There’s not a room in this house where you don’t see Long Island Sound,” Hays said.
The entire rear of the house, in fact, is almost completely covered in windows, giving visitors the feeling of staring out at a framed photo of the water. Except this is no photo. It’s the Sound itself, accented by impeccable landscaping and a stunning view of Fayerweather Lighthouse.
At 83, Hays is ready to downsize, and is listing the house at $899,900. But she’ll no doubt miss it, given that she practically had it rebuilt from the ground up.
“I did everything I wanted to do” to a house, Hays said.
